He and my grandfather William Stroud rode together during and after the '89 days. The gun belonged to WB he had not had it long when one night he and my grandfather were sharing a room and he could not make it go in the dresser drawer so he turned to my grandfather and said, “Will take this damn thing? I cannot get it in the drawer”. My grandfather used it for several years to hunt deer and killed two black bears with it. When he died it was given to my father and when my father passed away it was given to me. My son was talking to me today about the gun and I told him at one time it belonged to the father of the "hostess with the mostest".

Ray Stroud - Schertz, TexasAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31117373.post-77752779286969568772007-10-21T22:14:00.000-05:002007-10-21T22:14:00.000-05:00I went to my hs prom in 1988 at the skirvin. She changed the spelling of her first name as an adult. See Mesta chapter in James Abbott's book "Jansen" (Acanthus Press), about the decorating firm that decorated the house that Mesta shared with her sister, Marguerite Skirvin Tyron.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31117373.post-1156784022347974352006-08-28T11:53:00.000-05:002006-08-28T11:53:00.000-05:00Haha, I don't know about that, but thanks!Haha, I don't know about that, but thanks!Jasonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03474334212087016483noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31117373.post-1156512067711770802006-08-25T08:21:00.000-05:002006-08-25T08:21:00.000-05:00Thanks, Jason! I was rather surprised at what I found. Yes, seeing some of the old Skirvin brochures would be fun ... there's a pic of part of one at the county assessor's website, here, though it would have been a better pic if you'd taken it!Doug Dawghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14287287108412180656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31117373.post-1156481440924190072006-08-24T23:50:00.000-05:002006-08-24T23:50:00.000-05:00Doug, you continue to amaze and enlighten me with ...Doug, you continue to amaze and enlighten me with your depth of knowledge and research.

I am too young to remember when the Skirvin was open, but I am aware of it's importance in our history. I too am excited to see the renovation taking place. Will it still be the best of the best and host dignitaries and celebrities as in the past? Maybe not, but it will still be better than sitting there empty to rot.

Also, I don't know if they are still there or not, but somewhere in the Concourse there were some framed original brochures from the Skirvin. I always liked to look at those.

Thanks again for a most excellent post, as well as the later post on Perle Mesta.

jbJasonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03474334212087016483noreply@blogger.com
