Are you familiar with the Del Taco renovation in St Louis? The developer planned to tear it down, but the community convinced him to renovate it. Look at some of the photos of the renovation on Google image search - clearly he spent a TON of money on the project. The results were the salvation of a landmark, the creation of a classy and unique building, and tenants to bring profit to the developer.

If the manager of the Gold Dome will bring in tenants I can give my business to, I will. I switched to using Dr. Lam as my eye doctor after she bought the building, and I took my family to the Prohibition Room several times. I would have visited more businesses in the dome, but Lam seemed unable to bring in more "good" tenants. I imagine this was a failure of her business/management skills more than a fault of the building (although I understand the layout of the building wouldn't fit everybody). If the land is worth so much that a developer wants to tear down the building and build some Walgreens or CVS, obviously the location should support the right kind of business in the existing building.Clayhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05467487025819365084noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31117373.post-81702343996847427362012-05-01T08:43:33.742-05:002012-05-01T08:43:33.742-05:00Thanks, W. My congratulation.

I just wanted to add that I was the last union projectionist at the "Cinema Mayflower" when it closed. It had been showing X rated fare for some time. When the end came for the Caporal family (at least with the theatre) the attendance had dwindled to probably no more than 30 on any given day.

Probably not surprising given the climate and law enforcement view on such movies at the time. Because the Cinema Mayflower was equipped with 35mm projectors, they were very limited to what they could show. As the 80's progressed, and VCR's became available, people could watch "Hard Core" stuff at home. The fare we offered at the Mayflower was soft core at best. Additionally, the adult film industry stopped producing 35mm porn films and moved to video. The Mayflower attempted to keep up with the times and switched over to a closed video system and less than high quality projector.

People never really came back. . . and the theatre was closed for good soon after.

W. From the Golden Some, the Milk Bottle and the Tower Theater sign further down 23rd Street, that part of town (Uptown 23rd?) could really build a great marketing campaign around some of those vintage places.Ben Felderhttp://www.okcuptowner.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31117373.post-38013558320841348572012-03-15T23:14:31.202-05:002012-03-15T23:14:31.202-05:00No, I don't have it, Mike. No, I don't have it, Mike.Doug Dawghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14287287108412180656noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-31117373.post-51596974334740956722012-03-15T19:36:21.862-05:002012-03-15T19:36:21.862-05:00I just double-checked and that's the address I...I just double-checked and that's the address I sent it to. Peggy was a co-worker of my wife's at the Crum & Forster Insurance Company's claims office in the American Fidelity complex, and I remember the going-away party they had when she and David opened the deli. We still visit there often; David's baked goods (made on the premises) are the best available!

When Cookie's was operating as the Emerald Lounge, its owner also ran stock car races at a small track located on N May avenue, near the present location of the Honeybaked Ham place. The track circled a small farm pond, and even ran over its dam. I used to shoot photos at the track on Sunday afternoons; he paid the winners at the lounge every Sunday night, so I would process the photos in a hurry and have 8x10s available for the winners to buy with their winnings that night! They had several doctors and a dentist. I don't know when it was torn down.
In the 50's, and probably before and after, there was a tavern in-between the Mayflower and the Classen Cafeteria. The bar must not have been air conditioned because they left the front door open onto the sidewalk. My roommate and I would walk through the parking lot to have breakfast there on Saturday or Sunday, depending on our work schedules.
